Brainstorm 06:05
BRAINSTORM I fear all of the questions That have no answers Racing thoughts and images Always pushing faster Involuntary instincts In the form of reaction Can’t fight the internal clockwork Of everything I’ve become Pre-Chorus- But when I’m alone safe in my home Where all is known I don’t have to hide from what’s inside Cuz everything’s known Waking faces, unfamiliar places Where I go I close my eyes and try to envision Water moving slow Who holds the keys To all these riddles inside me? I wanna come back but the strangers Attack without warning (Pre-Chorus) Chorus- And everything that happens Is neither a blessing nor a curse It’s just the filters in my mind Trying to define what’s better or worse If I take moment to remember The shape of life’s form Perhaps I can avoid being caught In this brainstorm All becomes calm when safety is gone! I fear all of the questions That have no answers I fear all of the people That gain knowledge first (Chorus) I’ll never master All the decisions that I make I may never learn to give More than I take But I’ll try to define my world Without fear And try to understand All of the ones I hold dear

Deer Dance 07:52
DEER DANCE (intro: Woodstock) Born in the east Heading for the west We fall to the south Before ascending to the north We all have to live A moment at a time But if you open up your eyes You’ll never know what you’ll find Pre-Chorus- And this land you walk upon So many people have walked before Civilizations come and gone Listen to the wind you’ll hear their song The cycles of life The seasons change We follow the herd And pray for the rain A simple idea Born from a spark It keeps us warm And lights up the dark 2nd Pre-Chorus- Now we’re moving back to the earth Back to the cradle that gave us birth Away from all these glittering machines That take us further from our dreams Chorus- I can hear you from so far away You taught me to listen I remember today Running with the wind, growing from the land All of us together taking part in the dance The measure of a life Are the people we find We draw together And hold the line We’re never alone With hearts of stone Life springs forth From the seeds that are sown (1st Pre-Chorus + Chorus 2x)
3.
Fight On! 03:33
FIGHT ON! The road you walk upon You may walk alone The path to peace Is always paved in strife And if you run from darkness You may never see the light But if you lose your way The day shall break the night Pre-Chorus- And the world belongs to the young Who possess the warrior’s heart And who can….. Chorus- Fight on! You’re standing at the canyon’s edge You see the valley below There a wild river runs You hear those rapids flow Remember that the water Cut the rock upon which you stand Created the canyon Slowly eroded the land (Pre-Chorus + Chorus) Never break ya down! Always endure!
4.
Dissever 05:06
DISSEVER If I sever my soul Who’ll be there to bring me back whole In a shadow lull Fading colors that darkness dulls And here we divide Where the heart and mind no longer coincide The body hive The collective cord no longer binds Pre-Chorus- And ever dissever My soul from the soul There’s so many words There’s so many words that make no sense I apologize I apologize and recompense But who holds judgment As the moth so quickly burns Step by step Step by step and slowly I turn (Pre-Chorus) Chorus- Who makes sure the bodies lie Where no one can hear the cries? Who is the one who mocks the sun And makes sure time must run? Who says that rock can never roll And we’re all bought and sold? Who tells me that I’ll never know And dissevers my soul from the soul? My soul from the soul…. Can she see Can she see what's happened to me? Here’s my blood Here’s my soul as it drains through the floor The answer lies in a part Of the mind that’s uneasy to recognize I wanna try But I always get caught between the lines (Pre-Chorus + Chorus)
5.
TROUBLE IN PARADISE You say this is paradise But don’t hold your breath When you live in a fantasy It’s hard to remember just what you believe Say hello from paradise Tell me, which side are you on? They told us then that it could happen again Trying to obtain gifts that only heaven can send Chorus- But I can still hear your voice You’re telling me that there’s always a choice But we’ve got trouble in paradise All this time you’d think we’d get it right Say goodbye to paradise While you hold on with all your might Road signs are pointing to paradise But Atlas still ain’t sure Kofi Kingston’s not afraid to shine Positivity shouldn’t be that hard to find (Chorus)
6.
Eight Days 06:04
EIGHT DAYS I have eight days left til I’m set free Stare in the mirror only water I see There, future floats in a bottle on the sea It dances away as light leaves the day Pre-Chorus- And I know you’ll never understand I can’t say why But I’ll wait, wait forever if I can, I’ll try There’s eight days left, still a marionette The caged bird sings suspended by strings The mirror goes black, may never come back And down the hall a loudspeaker calls 2nd Pre-Chorus- And I know I’ll never forget that night Wondering if we ever had met inside Chorus- Eight days is not a lifetime 2x Eight days is a point on a line you’ll see There’s eight days left, the snare is set And when the wind blows, the sirens moan The voices call from nowhere at all If I close my eyes then I'm almost alive (1st Pre-Chorus + Chorus 2x)
7.
WEIGHTLESSNESS She was always the best of us Mother to galaxy’s child And now when senses ignite She’s left weightless all of the while Mountains rise in the sky Rivers are flowing through clouds Auroras bloom in a rose And now weightlessness is all that amounts Chorus- Loss of breath Stealing the wind from your back Weightlessness And everything is under attack The child sleeps Safely in a cradle of stars Weightlessness And the mother has drifted so far But she’ll always know where you are This vessel has run aground The hull is beginning to breach She stretches her arms And secures everything in her reach The mother to galaxy’s child She is the daughter of God Weightlessness she can’t accept She is the one who beckons the sun (1st Verse + Chorus 2x)
8.
Harbinger 03:41
HARBINGER I see the death of a light in the sky Too far away to wonder why When there are so many stars in the night Who could ever notice just one light? Is it a harbinger of what’s to come For what we have done? I see a man alone on the street No light in his eyes, no shoes on his feet He’s talking to me about what we’ve done And what it’ll look when kingdom comes Maybe he know something that I don’t Maybe I can’t see what’s in front of me Is he a harbinger of things to come For what I have done? Chorus- One day this’ll all be gone No one to decide what’s right or wrong When we’re the star that dies in the sky Who’ll be there to wonder why? I see the death of the light in your eyes When we realize it’s useless to try When we’re resigned to an unmarked grave And we live in a world that cannot be saved Maybe we know how it’s gonna end There’ll be no cavalry to send We’re all harbingers and our time has come To pay for what we’ve done
9.
Three Hawks 04:57
THREE HAWKS Light of the day, there’s still time to save A few hours on our way Weather seems fair, a song fills the air We don't speak, we don’t even dare Chorus- Seen them before here they come again Three hawks in the sky What message do they send? Circling above me as one watches close Three hawks in the sky Into the sun they fly We’re on the road, cars are moving slow Frustrated with nowhere to go Melody in my mind got left so far behind Thinking words that have no rhyme But there’s no peace When pressures never cease Can’t always tame the beast But when storms come They’re followed by the sun And the interstate Where we can make our run (Chorus) Now the sun fades as night takes the day In a meadow where we lay Stars in the sky Are reflected in your eyes And in my mind where wings take flight (Chorus 2x)
10.
GOODBYE CHARLOTTE Roll down that open road To a place I’ve always known Where the bright lights take me further From my forgotten home And I’ve spent more blood and sweat For spilled liquor on the floor I choked on the golden spoon And could never pick up the phone And the echoes in my mind Of the voices I’ve left behind Atlanta becomes Chicago Fades into Baton Rouge A rose in every town Pillows filled with perfume And I can’t remember her name But I’m sure it’ll come to me soon And if it don’t what does it matter I’ll be leaving at noon But oh, when I hit that stage I’ll never see the bars of my cage In the palm of my hand I’ll hold this place I’ll never lose that smile on my face Chorus- Well goodbye Charlotte we’ll meet again Somewhere down the road Around the bend When the lights go out and I’m all alone I’ll think of you, my forgotten home And when it’s all said and done I can say I’ve had my run I put it out there every night I fought in every fight Just leave me where I lay And remember me on that stage I might be on the mat But Charlotte will take me back She’s home… It’s home… Yeah!
11.
Gutter Charm 01:51
GUTTER CHARM 1 2 3 4! We’re a happy family, me and Eddie the rat He flies across the room Giving the finger to the cat Now we’re not monsters, just a little weird Watch me pulling lice from my moldy beard Chorus- Hello, hello, this is where we belong We’re finishing school dropouts Oozing gutter charm Train kept a’rollin’ just above our heads Knocking me and Eddie on our poor heads Now this apartment livin’, it suits me fine Staring at the pretty girls from my dusty blinds (Chorus) Don’t get yer knickers in a bunch that bad Remember back in high school I knew your dad We’d be smoking and drinking Like a couple of ol’ mates I watched him plow your ma Still got the vhs tapes (Chorus 2x)
12.
Hey! Anytime 03:26
HEY! ANYTIME Hey! Anytime you wanna run You can run with me We’ll run across the stars To the moon’s reflection on the sea You know I’ll always keep good time And help you sing a rhyme Cuz we always seem to find all the same signs Hey! Anytime you wanna dance You can dance with me I may not always understand Stay rooted like a tree But when it comes time to leave You’ll only leave with me Except for when I occasionally have to flee Hey! Anytime you gotta cry You can count on me I may not always say things right But I always will believe And you know when those tears go dry You know you’ll laugh until you sigh And then we’ll finally find ourselves A little piece of mind (Repeat 1st verse)

about

The Origin of Storms:

Sitting on his computer chair in front of a desk adorn with random studio equipment, nests of wires and monster movie action figures, Tom Doyle (founder of the heavy rock band, Dark Donovan) runs his hands through his hair and laughs saying, “After doing this in one way or another for about twenty years, I better have learned a little something by now otherwise I’m in real trouble.”

Tom has been around the musical block, sort to speak, for awhile now having been a part of multiple rock and metal bands in the Long Island area and hosted his own open mic night (Hitchhiker’s Open Mic) for a spell.

He continues, “I had always worked with great people and tried to learn everything I could from anyone I met. But it got to the point that I just had so many songs that I had to do something about them. I had to get them out and going into studios to record albums for thousands of dollars each just wasn’t an option.” For that reason, Powderkeg Studio located in Mineola, New York was created.

After the band he cofounded, Econoline, went on indefinite hiatus the songs had indeed begun to pile up. Doyle estimates that he had written over 30 of them from 2016 – 2019. Even though they were primarily written on acoustic guitar and 8 track demos were made, the intention was always to record and release them with full arrangements. In his mind, it would all eventually culminate into a full band, ready for promoting the material live. The plan was to rehearse and try to release the first album, Brainstorm, by the end of 2020. It was to be a double album with the first disc being the full band recording and the second being the aforementioned demos. Of course, as we know, the world had other plans.

“Once Covid hit, the band idea was put on the back burner. We were in lockdown and even afterwards it became difficult getting people comfortable enough to come into a studio.”

So the decision was made to turn the demo bonus disc into its own album and Brainstorm [Acoustic] (2020) was born. “The good thing about that was it became a good exercise to really learn the equipment and how to record by myself cuz as time went on, I realized the window I had to get people to collaborate was closing and the parts I had planned for different musicians were dwindling.”

One person though that Doyle had come to deem indispensable was Dennis Mirovsky, drummer and long time collaborator with Econoline. Tom quickly realized that the project could not proceed without him. “Some of the songs were a little out there and I just knew that he would get everything I was going for. We just have that kind of rapport. And honestly, if he wasn’t able to do it I probably would’ve folded up shop and just stuck to acoustic recordings and shows.”

Finally, in June of 2021 the recording began for Brainstorm in proper fashion and luckily for the project some of the most crucial musicians were able to make it down to contribute. For Doyle this became a way to pay respect to his past while working towards the future. He tried to assemble as many of the incredible players from all of the varied musical incarnations of the last twenty years. His oldest friend, guitarist for Econoline, Anthony Zammit contributed four solos to the album. Tom Muller and Jared Falquecee, whom had both been jamming with Dark Donovan before the pandemic both made stellar appearances. Ali Abolghasemi, whom Doyle had not worked with since the early 2000s added keyboards to some of the more introspective, almost proggy, tracks on the album. Newcomer into Dark Donovan scene, though a wily musical veteran, TomCat Bob contributed not just banjo to the proceedings but also unbridled enthusiasm which proved to be magnetic whenever he was participating. And last but definitely not least was his band mate, the founder of Urban Teakettle, Alana Hollander who sang beautifully and hauntingly on two tracks. She is also not only responsible for coming up with name of the album but the band name also.

“One really great byproduct of this whole thing was being able to work with Dennis so closely; not only with the drumming but with the actual production of the album. Having another set of ears and someone to bounce ideas off of became crucial and it became clear that this had become a two man band. You know, eventually we want to start playing live and adding permanent players to the mix but during this recording process we had really cemented this nucleus.”

Now with the release of Brainstorm (2022), it is palpable that an apex has been reached but there is still more to climb. “We’re really happy with the album but it’s like everything is still just beginning. We want to get out there and promote it and we still have a whole other album in the works. So it’s nice to take a breath and enjoy what’s been accomplished by everyone with Brainstom but there’s still so much more to go.”

Yes, Dark Donovan is planning to release their self titled second album by the end of year. The mixes are just about ready to be sent out for mastering. So in a real sense, they may have only reached the eye of the storm.
